Questions about VendRx

How automated prescription dispensing works, who is responsible for each prescription, how medication and patient data are protected, and what it takes to bring a VendRx unit to your clinic.

How VendRx works

What is VendRx?

VendRx is an automated pharmacy dispensing platform. It places a secure, software-controlled medication unit inside hospitals, urgent care clinics, physician practices and campus health centers, so patients leave with their prescription instead of making a second stop at a pharmacy. VendRx is a technology platform, not a pharmacy or a healthcare provider: licensed pharmacists at partner pharmacies do the dispensing, and the VendRx unit securely stores and releases the verified medication.

How does VendRx work?

Three steps in one visit. The prescription is routed through the clinic's existing workflow, including Epic and the Surescripts e-prescribing network. A licensed pharmacist reviews it and is available for a video consultation when one is required or the patient asks for one. The unit then releases the medication to the patient on site.

Is a pharmacist involved in every VendRx prescription?

Yes. A licensed pharmacist dispenses and VendRx vends. The pharmacist at a partner pharmacy performs the clinical review and verification for each patient under state law. The VendRx unit stores pre-packed, pharmacist-verified medication and releases it to the right patient at the right time.

What is the difference between dispensing and vending?

Dispensing is the licensed pharmacy act: clinical review and verification of medication for a specific patient, done by a pharmacist. Vending is the secure storage and release of medication a pharmacist has already verified. VendRx handles the vending, so the clinic never counts or handles the medicine.

Does VendRx integrate with Epic and e-prescribing?

Yes. VendRx is certified in Epic App Orchard and integrated with the Surescripts e-prescribing network, so prescriptions move through the systems clinicians already use.

Can patients get their prescription after hours?

The unit works whenever its host site is open. In a 24-hour emergency department or a campus clinic, a patient discharged at 2 a.m. can leave with medication in hand. Pharmacist consultation is available by video in English and Spanish.

Safety and privacy

How does VendRx make sure patients get the right medication?

Every container is identified by a data matrix barcode that encodes its NDC, lot number, expiration date and serial number. If a container cannot be verified, it cannot be released. Across more than 90,700 completed dispenses, VendRx has zero documented wrong-medication releases.

What happens if a medication is recalled or stored at the wrong temperature?

Each unit monitors temperature and humidity in real time, and a deviation shuts the unit down to protect the medication. When a drug is recalled, the affected product is locked out across the network so it cannot be released to a patient, and it is flagged for removal at the next service visit.

Does a VendRx unit store patient health information?

No. Patient information lives in the cloud-based prescription record and nothing is retained on the machine itself. The platform is built to be HIPAA compliant by design.

Where VendRx is available

Where is VendRx used today?

VendRx units operate in hospital emergency departments, urgent care clinics, family practices, multi-site health systems and university health centers, with completed security reviews in more than 12 states. Health systems using VendRx include Banner Health, Intermountain Health, Lee Health and MultiCare.

Is VendRx available in my state?

Pharmacy regulation is set state by state, so it depends on where you are. The VendRx availability map shows where units operate today and how each state treats remote and automated dispensing. Confirm what is permitted with your state board of pharmacy.

What medications can a VendRx unit carry?

A deployment typically covers about 80% of a facility's formulary for the most commonly prescribed medications, such as first fills for acute conditions. Specialty medications, infusions and complex consultations still belong at a traditional pharmacy. What a unit carries is decided by the dispensing pharmacy within state and federal law.

For clinics and health systems

What does VendRx cost a clinic?

Pricing is flexible. It can be structured around the hardware, per transaction, or a combination of the two, and costs aggregate across all of a client's locations. For many partners the platform pays for itself in as few as 3 to 8 scripts, depending on use case. VendRx supplies, installs and maintains every unit.

Does my clinic need to hire staff or change its workflow?

No. There is no pharmacist to hire and no new system to learn. The unit runs as an extension of your existing clinical and pharmacy workflow, and your staff never counts or handles medication.

How do I bring VendRx to my clinic or health system?

Use the contact form at vendrx.net/contact, email info@vendrx.net or call (310) 903-2871. The VendRx team walks you through the model, the technology and what deployment looks like at your site.

More questions

How can a VendRx unit help our clinic serve patients in pharmacy deserts?

A VendRx unit helps clinics serve patients in pharmacy deserts by releasing pharmacist-verified medication directly on site so patients leave with their prescription instead of making a second stop. Patients in these areas often face limited access to medication. When your clinic closes, the nearest pharmacy might also be closed. By placing a secure unit inside your facility, patients receive medication before they leave. A licensed pharmacist dispenses the medication, and the VendRx unit vends it.
