After-hours prescription dispensing
Your clinic closes, and so does the nearest pharmacy. A VendRx unit works whenever its host site is open, so in a 24-hour emergency department or a campus clinic, a patient discharged at 2 a.m. can leave with medication in hand.

The pharmacist is still part of every prescription at 2 a.m.
A licensed pharmacist at a partner pharmacy performs the clinical review and verification for each patient under state law. The VendRx unit stores pre-packed, pharmacist-verified medication and releases it to the right patient. When a consultation is required or the patient asks for one, the pharmacist is reached by phone or video in English and Spanish, never on the unit's screen.
Prescriptions arrive through the systems clinicians already use. VendRx is certified in Epic App Orchard and integrated with the Surescripts e-prescribing network.

The unit keeps its host site’s hours.
A VendRx unit is available whenever the site it sits in is open. Put it in a facility that never closes, and patients can pick up at any hour.
Illustration. Each unit follows the hours of its own host site.
The same three steps at 2 a.m. as at 2 p.m.
Before the patient reaches the unit, a licensed pharmacist at a partner pharmacy has reviewed and verified the prescription, overnight as during the day.

Confirm who they are
The patient enters their birthdate and name on the touchscreen.

Review the prescription
The screen lists what is being released. A pharmacist is available by phone or video if the patient wants to talk.

Leave with it
The verified container is released into the bay, and the patient walks out with their medication.
More than 90,700 completed dispenses, zero documented wrong-medication releases.Every container is barcode-identified, and a container that cannot be verified cannot be released.
After-hours questions
Can a patient get a prescription when the pharmacy is closed?
Yes, when the VendRx unit sits in a site that is open. The unit works whenever its host site is open. Where the facility runs around the clock, so does the unit, and a licensed pharmacist can be reached by phone or video.
Who checks the prescription overnight?
A licensed pharmacist, the same as during the day. A licensed pharmacist dispenses and VendRx vends. The pharmacist at a partner pharmacy performs the clinical review and verification for each patient under state law, and the unit releases only medication that pharmacist has verified.
Where does after-hours access help most?
In 24-hour emergency departments, campus clinics and places with few pharmacies nearby. About 48 million Americans, 1 in 7, live in a pharmacy desert (GoodRx Research, 2025). On a student campus, the unit means 24/7 access with no car needed and no pharmacy hours to work around.
How does VendRx make sure patients get the right medication?
Every container is identified by a data matrix barcode that encodes its NDC, lot number, expiration date and serial number. If a container cannot be verified, it cannot be released. Across more than 90,700 completed dispenses, VendRx has zero documented wrong-medication releases.
Does a VendRx unit store patient health information?
No. Patient information lives in the cloud-based prescription record and nothing is retained on the machine itself. The platform is built to be HIPAA compliant by design.
